Built in 1314 thanks to Cardinal Ricardo Petroni, this ancient monastery was designed for meditation and prayer and is located in the countryside, 2 km from Siena's famous Piazza del Campo. The property passed from hand to hand until 1969, the year in which Mrs Anna Grossi Recordati fell in love with the majestic, ruined complex and decided to restore it to its former glory. In 1975 the Certosa di Maggiano was turned into a hotel and became part of the Relais & Chateaux brand. The 17 rooms of the Certosa di Maggiano, corresponding to what were 17 monastic cells, are situated on 3 floors. Differing in style, colour scheme, view and furnishings, they share a common simple, refined elegance, in addition to all the modern comforts.
